SHAKEOLOGY 3 DAY CLEANSE


The Science Behind the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse
by Steve Edwards, Director of Results

I like to call the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse a “performance cleanse.” This is because it was designed to be done with a workout program. Let’s take a look at how this differs from other cleanses, how to tailor it to your needs, and what to expect if you decide to try it.

First of all, it’s not a true cleanse. It’s a calorie-restricted and nutrient-dense diet plan. Traditional cleanses contain very few calories and nutrients. Compared to the much more popular Master Cleanse, it’s like an all-you-can-eat buffet. Traditional cleansing diets are done to rid your system of toxins and bring it into homeostasis. They also contain a spiritual aspect. This process can take a long time, which is why you may have seen coworkers walking around the office in a zombie-like state for weeks on end—swilling a strange concoction of lemons and maple syrup.

The Shakeology cleanse is nothing like that. Depending on how you decide to do it, you’ll be eating frequently and consuming between 800 and 1,200 calories per day, and it could be even more should you feel the need. The point of this cleanse is not calorie restriction, per se—it’s nutrient efficiency. The aim is to get the most nutrients possible into the fewest number of calories. The goal is to put all of these calories to use as a part of your exercise program, to rid your body of undigested foods and toxins, and to bring your hydration levels into homeostasis. The result you’re after is not weight loss—though it will likely occur—but for your body to be running more efficiently. This should make you feel lighter and more energetic, even though you’re doing an exercise program.

How It Works
Your eating structure doesn’t change. You still eat every few hours while you’re awake. Each meal should have a balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber. And while you’re not eating as much food as you’d normally eat, your calorie-to-nutrient ratio is extremely high. This means that you shouldn’t restrict the actual nutrients you’re getting by too much, so activity can continue as normal.

We recommend you try to keep your shakes to just Shakeology. Adding fruits of any kind, or seeds (for fat and fiber), or the Shakeology Fiber supplement, can and should be done as you see fit.

Ditto for your one solid meal—a salad. As we all know from any salad bar, the definition of salad can be varied. The goal of the salad in the plan is to keep your calories coming from natural sources (no artificial ingredients should be added, including artificial salad dressing). Aside from that, you can add ingredients as necessary. Keep your meat intake to four ounces or less, but add veggies, seeds, nuts, fruits, and legumes in quantities to satiate you.

The goal of the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse is to optimize your performance. You want to eat enough to fuel your day AND your workout. The foods you’re eating are so high in fiber and nutrients that it’s virtually impossible to overeat. You’ll be consuming so much fiber, along with enzymes and digestive aids, that your body’s ability to flush excess foods quickly will be at its peak.

What to Drink
Water, of course, is recommended in quantity. This is vital to any cleanse, because one of your goals is to bring your hydration into homeostasis. When your electrolytes are out of balance—the main problem we have is salt—you often retain water outside of your cells. This situation, which we refer to as retaining water, is cured by drinking more water. As the excess salts are diffused, your body begins to hydrate your cells (using sodium as it should be used) and flush the water held outside the cells. So, oddly enough, you drink water to eliminate water retention.

Sodas, alcohols, juices, etc., should be eliminated entirely during a cleanse. Coffee and tea, which are diuretics, should be minimized at the very least and eliminated if possible. Again, performance is the key, so if you need a cup of Joe as a pick-me-up, go ahead. Just use only as needed, and don’t use additives. Eliminating sugar and chemicals is vital. However, do not use energy drinks or soda for this purpose, including the ones with artificial sweeteners. Coffee drinkers may find that switching to black tea during a cleanse will give you the energy you’re looking for with less upset. Coffee’s acidic nature can heighten the effects in a negative way during your cleanse.

Why You Won’t Lose Weight
I should say why you might not lose weight, but I wanted to get your attention. Most people will lose some weight during a cleanse, but that is not the goal. Those with a lot of undigested gunk in their systems will lose weight as it’s flushed out. Those of you who are properly hydrated and already eat well are less likely to lose. For those of you who need to lose weight, take heart: you are setting up your system to use nutrients more efficiently and improving your ability to lose weight through structured diet and exercise. So while you may not lose much on the cleanse, you’ll be more prepared to lose weight later.

Another reason why we don’t always lose weight on cleanses is due to a stress hormone called cortisol. Restricting calories is stressful to the body, and it reacts by releasing cortisol. Cortisol is performance-enhancing in the short term, but if you somehow keep your body stressed for long periods, it creates havoc in your system and can cause you to doggedly hang onto weight in a type of survival mode. We don’t want this to occur, which is one reason the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse is short. It’s important not to remain in a highly calorie-deficient state for long periods of time, especially when you are trying to exercise hard.

The Shakeology® 3-Day Cleanse
The key is to follow the same regimen all three days.
Essentials:
3 Shakeology shakes per day
2 cups of green tea per day
1 or 2 pieces of fruit per day (optional)
1 salad for dinner—can include fish or poultry
No dairy or extra sugars (this includes almond and soy milk)!
Drink 2 to 4 liters of water every day
Only use low-fat dressings, and go easy on the salt and/or pepper to taste
2 snacks before/after any of the major meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)
Fruit is optional, and it is discouraged (however, some of you will need the calories while others may not)
Power-workout participants (those who are already super conditioned) are recommended the higher numbers of calories
For maximum results, do NOT use additives
Dinner salad may include WHITE GRILLED PROTEIN—poultry or fish only

Daily Regimen:

Family-Style Dinners
- Try to avoid putting full portions on your plate at the beginning of the meal.
- Portion control will help eliminating over eating. Use small baggies instead of the larger ones.
- Avoid eating in front of the TV. (this will cause you to be distracted and eat more if your plate is full dinner time)
- Avoid late night eating, (don't eat after 8pm)

In -Your- Face Goodies
- Studies have showed that when we see something delicious, our pancreas secretes insulin, which lowers our blood sugar and allows us to feel hungry.
- A few ways to control this is by keeping sweets out of sight. Don't leave the baked goods or candy on the kitchen counter. Don't forget the old saying "out of sight out of mind".
- Try to avoid buying sweets at the market. Make a food list and stick to it!

Avoid Binging
- Eating one meal a day will allow you to over eat and consume more calories in that one sitting for the entire day.
- It is KEY to plan at least 5-6 small meals a day. This will help eliminate those FAST FOOD stops and eating those once a day meals.
- Most of all…. count your calories!

What PRESENTER CAMP has done 4 me & MVP for Powder Blue Productions 2009

I'm so flippin excited!! I have been working as a presenter for Powder Blue Productions since Jan 2001! My life has seriously changed...yeah yeah...I know I know- you hear people throw that statement out all the time. But, yeah, I'm being HONEST! I'm not a sucker, I've never been one to be on a bandwagon, as well as I thought my "wildest dreams" of what could be my life just weren't a possibility for me since I took a path in the medical field working in radiology.

MY LIFE HAS CHANGED and I owe it all to Chalene Johnson, Bret Johnson, and of course myself! They gave me an opportunity, but they didn't GIVE me the opportunity. I had to take it and develop it.

WHERE I STARTED: I have been an "aerobics" instructor since 1991. Started my career in college when the college gym asked if I'd teach a step class. I had never taken group exercise, so had no clue! I created my classes by copying the choreography from Kari Anderson, Kathy Smith, and that Brenda blonde short spiky hair chick. I also "taped" Friday Night Dance trax to use for my music. Boy, I guess I knew nothing about the 32 count! I taught 2x a week to only 1 girl in attendance.

That changed of course, and I quickly became one of the most popular kickboxing instructors Syracuse and then later in Buffalo NY. I'm not being cocky, just it is what it is LOL- I was the instructor that had the best music, best choreography, and the largest classes.

I found Turbo Kick when I was searching online for music and videos for class material. Cause yes, that's what I spent a TON of my time doing so that I could be the best. I found these JAZZ PANTS that claimed they took 1 inch off your thighs! They were called the miracle Jazz pants. I bought about 10 of them ;)

I also bought Round 4. Got it home, played it, and said- what? Who can actually DO this in class. I didn't understand Turbo, cause it wasn't here in NY at the time (2000). So the home study to me was completely foreign. I had no idea why the cassette tape had a siren, or why the music stop every so often in the mix.
How Did I then Fall in Love?
I was email buddies with Chalene Johnson on an email "group" (much like a message board). She announced her presenter search. I applied, she said "you're not teaching turbo!?", and I thought- crap- how can I do that when I don't really get how to do it? I just did it. When I went to CA for Presenter Camp, that's where my world changed.

PRESENTER CAMP:
I took my first live turbo class from Chalene and Anna Rita (ZENA). I felt sooo out of place as I was in the mix of these cute fit girls who all knew and loved turbo as they were mostly from 24 Hour Fitness. I knew I had made the right decision when the first time I met Chalene, she gave me this big smile, delighted face, and the biggest hug welcoming me.

HOW DID PRESENTER CAMP CHANGE ME?
This training is unlike anything out there. I never knew REALLY what it takes to be an instructor until I took this training. I never viewed teaching group exercise the way it was pointed out to me by Chalene and her crew. I am amazed and kind of embarrassed in thinking I was "the bomb" back in my world when in reality, I was a minnow in the Atlantic Ocean. I'm so thankful to have had my eyes opened, as well as had a smack of reality.

Presenter Camp has challenged me unlike anything ever before. I cannot believe how small minded I was! I couldn't believe how GREAT I thought I was! I can't believe that I thought my then 9 years of teaching experience was just a small bit of what teaching actually is!

I knew how to cue, I knew the 8 count, the 32 count. I knew how to work their arses off. I knew how to make up choreography....but what I didn't know....was WAAAAAAYYY more than that! All of those things I just mentioned? Yeah....I actually learned them the BEST way! There is a secret to it! AND- I learned SOOO much more about being an instructor and how to ROCK THE HOUSE. This is stuff that no one teaches you! I GOT THE INSIDE SCOOP OF THIS!

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I WENT BACK TO MY CLASSES?
They didn't recognize me! Seriously! I dressed differently, I wore my hair differently, I had a whole new view on my 1 hour expereince with them. I was never the same.
This was Jan 2001.

HOW HAS ATTENDING PRESENTER CAMP CHANGED MY LIFE THEN?
Because of my attendance in this training in 2001, I have met many goals I have had established in my fitness career. It's AMAZING what this one training has allowed me to achieve as well as opened up for me! I'm so excited to have to set NEW goals!

Calorie Intake to Lose Weight

Did you know it takes 3,500 deficit to lose 1 pound? So with exercise and a focused diet, you can create your goal of weightloss!

What happens when calories are too low for too long?

1) Muscle mass is broken down for energy (catabolism).
2) Metabolic rate will begin to drop (typically) after 3 days of very low calories- this is related to, and compounded by the loss of muscle mass.
3) With very low calories you risk sluggishness, nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, and often irritability. You are completely set-up for a regain in fat if you suddenly return to your previous eating patterns.

Ways to boost your metabolism.

- Increasing cardio

- Weight training

-Cheat meals (ocassional high-calorie meals

Don't forget adequate sleep and hydration play an important role to weight loss.


Lose Fat and Buld Muscle

Depending on your body type (tall, short,fat, skinny, volume of muscle mass, hig/low metabolism, age, exercise or not, healthy eater or junk foods. It is very hard to give a set calorie intake for everyone. The average is 1200 calories for women and 1800 calories for men. This is a good starting point to gage yourself.

Here are some highlights on how you can start controlling your calorie intake.

- Plan your meals each day! (the day of or week before)

- Eat 5-6 small meals a day (each "meal" roughly consisting of about 200-350 calories (estimated). Eating more often will allow your body to burn those calories instead of putting your body in starvation mode to store fat.

- Exercise regularly

- Building muscle burns fat

- Wear a body bugg. It's No mystery! It tells you EXACTLY what your body outputs for calories and shows you the exact plan for weight loss.

Shakeology- Feedback and Recipes

This should be a staple in everyone's diet! This is seriously the MOST important item you can injest into your body. Your body is a machine. To fuel it with high fat, high sugar, empty calories and no nutrients...you OF COURSE are setting yourself up for failure and an unhealthy body.
The cost of each shake is sometimes CHEAPER than what you are buying when you are out an about for your "meal". Take a look at a value meal from McDonalds- for lunch- that can run ya $8! What about a Latte or cap from Starbucks- at least $4.50! What benefits are you getting from that? Are you giving yourself the protein you need? Are taking in something that will make your body process food and make you regular? Are you taking in something that will give you energy for the long haul? Are you taking in somewthing that will help you lose weight? Lower your cholesterol?? Seriously- why are you even thinking twice about it.
Here are some of my favorite recipes:


Chocolate Shakeology
1) cup of ice, 8 oz almond milk, 1 tsp peanut butter, 2-4 oz water
2) cup of ice, 8-12 oz water, 1 tsp white chocolate (or cheesecake or banana) Sugar Free Fat Free jello mix

Greenberry
1) cup of ice, 6 oz water and 6 oz orange juice
2) Cup of ice, 8 oz water, 1/2 banana

More Celebs are doing P90X instead gyms and trainers.

The Rumors Were True
Any Beachbody complaints about not getting noticed by the media are distant history. And P90X is the best free publicist we could have hoped for.
Without spending a dime on endorsements or PR efforts, word continues to spread about the shift in health and fitness from gyms and trainers to our DVD programs, and it seems to be nearing a real tipping point.
First it was Chicago lead singer Jason Scheff who used P90X and the coaching opportunity to motivate himself to get back into shape. Then it was NFL kicker David Akers who's trainer suggested P90X to answer coach Andy Reid's command to get back into pro-bowl condition. Then People ran a story on Poppy Montgomery from Without A Trace. Then we got calls that Sheryl Crow has transformed her body with P90X, and went on and on about it on the red carpet of the Grammys. Then at the Pro Bowl, Baltimore Ravens' super star Ray Lewis told the media he uses P90X.
And then there was a rumor that a "Twitter Tweet" surfaced that Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore were asking questions about this P90X thing they keep seeing on TV.
It looks like the rumors were true.Look what just got posted by People Magazine...

Peyton Elizabeth blessed our lives on her arrival on October 1st via scheduled c-section. Delivery was a much better experience this time around, but the recovery is a lot more painful and slow going this time around. I have been slow in communications due to the process of my recovery and it's slow journey. Wishing everyday by so that I can get better, faster.
Peyton is a such a blessing and such a wonderful baby. We are very lucky to have her as an addition to our family. Johnny has recognized a new baby in our lives, but hasn't acted in either direction towards her. He just notices her. He does give her a kiss goodnight everynight though, but has run away when we requested for them to get a picture. New experiences for us all.

DELIVERY DATE is October 1st! So that means I will need to sub out my classes- seriously- I know I thought I could possibly be superwoman and jump right back into teachign after a c-section, but I guess I will have to listen to my doctor.

TURBO KICK CLASSES: I will be teaching my last Turbo class Sept 18th. I wanted to give my body some "get ready" time and not be responsible for teaching. Will be fun to take some classes!!
PiYo and TBC: I will be teaching these classes straight until delivery- last TBC class Sept 26 and last PiYo class Sept 29

While transferring my 8mm vhs to DVD, I came across my presenter application video for Powder Blue. Sadly, at that time (2001) I thought I was so good with my form, my energy, my class...but comparing that tape to the level of an instructor I am now...makes me say WOW! I know for a fact that TurboKick and PiYo has brought me to an all new level in instructing. I'm trying to pin point, now why would this program do this to me? What is at the top of my head is that these programs bring out the inhibition. Sometimes as instructors, we center too much on what people would think, and "oh I can't do that, they would laugh or think I'm crazy!"....That's the difference! Who cares!!! Bring it on baby! The crazier you want to be, the more challenging, the harder intense kick booty...whatever! Family Tubing Pics

I had my sister, her husband, and 4 kids up from NJ Wed June 27th. Her birthday was the 28th- so I surprised her with a spa day. She HATES massages- so I told her she was getting one as we walked in the spa. Very funny as she was answering the questionnaire what her skin type was, as she made referneces to her arms and legs....she was getting a facial. She never knew it the entire time she was in the room, and told the technician she didn't shave. Thought that was kinda funny. Wonder what the tech thought.

My other 2 sisters and their families arrived on Thursday as well as a surprise to her. We had a house full! Very fun and so glad that we were all able to get together.

On Saturday we tied up with my cousin and his family for a day of boating. He has a new Yamaha boat that goes crazy fast. My husband, my brother in law Michael, and my sister Connie all ventured to go tubing. Some awesome pics were taken and one of the highlights of their trip here. I'm so blessed to be able to share this time with my family and appreciate them all for all of their differences.
